The Role of Nurse Informaticist in Systems Development and Implementation

Applying information and communication technology in nursing applies to nursing. For example, the life cycle of systems development refers to a combination of actions that organizations to plan and implement change. This development is commonly used in hospital project management to create new information technologies. This essay aims to explain the role of a nurse at the graduate level in guiding their participation in the implementation team when executing a new system of nursing documentation and defining how the nurse will participate in and impact the five processes in the life cycle of systems development.

A nurse manager must consider the advantages and disadvantages of involving nurse leaders in implementing health information technologies. The advantage of involving nurse leaders is that they ensure the new system is usable and acceptable for the nurses it will impact. Nurse leaders are useful in implementing the development because they research how the technology will improve the quality of life (World Health Organization, 2021). The five stages of development are planning, analysis, design, implementation, and support after implementation.

The planning stage is the most important development stage because it offers a project's direction. It also affects the outcome of the other stages. The graduate nurse at the planning stage will work together with the members of the interdisciplinary team to explore and develop all required sources to ensure successful implementation (Fernandez et al., 2019). Involving a nurse leader in the planning stage will offer an accurate perspective to aid in developing a system that is safe and effective.

During the analysis phase,  the nurse aids in prioritizing the requirements of a project to determine possible outcomes in the market and make recommendations to the management. The failure to gather the right project requirements and determine the necessary outcome will lead to delays, poor communication, and data loss. The analysis process has steps like analyzing how the workflow is conducted, communication, and the tools for making decisions (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021). The analysis phase also determines all technical requirements, such as hardware, staffing, space, and software. Involving nurses at this stage is important because they review important policies and point out the changes required to accommodate the process of new technologies and new work processes.

The design phase is an important part of the cycle because it promotes general configuration in technology and discusses the system's operation and architecture. Nurses play a critical role in reinforcing the system's primary purposes regarding networking, archiving, user interfaces, software, data retrieval, and hardware. The nurses customize the system to provide support regarding clinical decisions, which aids in supporting clinical practices in various specialties.

The implementation phase entails the nurse working with their clinical team to install and customize the system. This phase is crucial for nurses because they train the staff about the new technology (McKay & Vanaskie, 2018). The nurses also ensure that the staff and management maintain positive and direct communication for positive outcomes.

During the post-implementation phase, the nurse must continue offering support for the new system. The support includes more training, understanding the new technology and its effects, and if the staff is complying with the set rules. Involving the nurse at this point is crucial in determining any flaws in the technology. The phase also makes it necessary to understand flaws and make the necessary upgrades, maintaining the technology’s efficiency.
