Chemistry is the only discipline of science that has the key to an essential comprehension of the underlying origins of health and illness. Chemistry is a discipline of science that has numerous connections to human existence and other disciplines (Ranga). It is an integral component of any doctrine of nature; it is an impressive method of intellectual discipline; it directs the merchant and the manufacturer toward effectiveness in production and product pureness; and, maybe most importantly, it contains the key that alone would unlock the gate to a vital comprehension of the invisible factors that cause of health and illness. This is among the most valuable and crucial ways that any science discipline may benefit humanity in the next years (Ranga).

Ten hundreds of years ago, in the period of the alchemists, the chemistry was termed “the handmaid of medicine;” presently, this link is not weaker, but instead considerably greater. This article aims to draw attention to many aspects in which contemporary chemistry could aid medical theory and practice that a strong association between medicine and chemistry is evident to everyone (Ranga). Our bodies are entirely composed of chemical components, and all of the many activities of the living body rely, at least in part, on chemical processes. Chemical processes allow humans to digest food, stay warm, and generate muscle energy. It is quite likely that our sensory inputs, brain ideas, and the technique of relaying them through the neurons are all involved in some way with chemical processes. The following are some of the uses of chemistry in medicine.

Drug Design and Pharmacology

Because it generates novel compounds for future research, chemistry significantly affects drug development (Salehi et al.). Natural product-based semi-synthesis or microwave-aided biosynthesis is also used to develop novel medicinal compounds. Historically, plant extracts with intriguing biological features were the primary source of novel medications. In the last three decades, the significance of chemistry in conjunction with new technology, such as diverse computational chemistry approaches, has seen a significant increase in drug development and precise drug delivery (Salehi et al.) According to Yadav et al., chemistry has a significant influence on the medication development process and the fight against HIV/AIDS.

A drug is a compound that alters the body’s physiological functions. Pharmacologists must comprehend how this biological compound will react with the system when people consume a tablet or receive an injection from a doctor. If the chemical composition is not the correct shape or size, this might not perform as expected. Consider the medicine to be a key. Whenever people want the key to executing an operation, such as unlocking a doorknob, they must build it with a precise shape, size, and makeup.

The key may be of the correct size and form, but if it is manufactured of printing paper, it will not open the door. To open a door, humans require a distinct chemical structure, a metallic one. Whenever a medication is created, people expect it to have a chemical composition that can accomplish an activity in the body. This involves getting assimilated by the body and attaching to receptors on a cell, signaling the cell to perform or refrain from doing an activity. But, much like our last key, the chemical molecule will only attach to this receptor if it has the proper shape, size and composition.

Pharmacology is more than merely determining how a substance will affect the body. It is about how substances interact with other substances in the body. For example, there is a medication called Carafate, sometimes called sucralfate. The drug is composed of a “sucrose sulfate-aluminum” mixture. The drug is administered to safeguard the gastrointestinal system whenever a physician believes a person has ulcers. In this scenario, an ulcer is just damage to the lining of the digestive system (Pokorski et al.). Sucralfate is administered to the patient as a slurry or a pill. The problem is that, according to its mode of action (how it functions in the body), it prevents several other medications from fully assimilated or activated when taken.

Sterilization

Several contemporary medical and laboratory devices and gadgets are heat sensitive, including a custom tray. This implies that certain of its constituents must not be subjected to high temperatures. This is when chemistry enters the picture. Chemical disinfection is the preferred method for sterilizing them without utilizing heat. Chemical sterilization is the technique of killing, eliminating, and removing all viruses, bacteria, and germs using low-temperature solvents. This can take the form of either gas or liquid substances (Pokorski et al.). Chemicals are employed in a wide range of applications and procedures. Some can be blended with other compounds. A few of them can also be utilized in conjunction with steam sterilization. Chemistry aids in the manufacture and use of surgical materials (artificial skin and sterile materials). Sutures utilized in many procedures nowadays do not need to be removed since they disintegrate in the body over time.

Diagnosis

Chemical pathology studies physiological materials such as urine, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid. Diseases may be detected and monitored by determining where and how the body’s chemistry has altered (Pokorski et al.). Several ailments are caused by a disruption in the body’s chemical structure. Chemical pathology combines medicine and science. Laboratory specialists can identify if a patient’s systems are performing normally, diagnose disorders, and propose therapy by knowing the chemistry of physiological fluids and analyzing them (Pokorski et al.). High blood sugar, for instance, could indicate diabetes. Glucose is a kind of carbohydrate that the body processes as fuel. Insulin, a chemical, regulates blood glucose levels. Diabetes can occur if the body does not create enough insulin.

Chemistry is the only discipline of science that has the key to a truly fundamental understanding of the underlying origins of health and illness. Chemistry generates novel compounds for future research, hence having a significant effect on the development of drugs.
