Electronic health records contain abbreviations throughoutpatient records and information systems. Various specialties havedeveloped a collection of commonly used abbreviations that are notrecognizable to those not working within that specialty.Additionally, many healthcare facilities and physicians providetheir staff with a list of “approved” abbreviations. Further TheJoint Commission (TJC) has issued a list of abbreviations, acronymsand symbols that should no longer be used. As a healthcare managerof a clinic, you must address the use of abbreviations with yourstaff due to errors in patient care.
