Grading Standards for Reading Summary Paper

10—Excellent Shows a strong understanding of the reading with accurate information from the reading. Responds to all questions in an original and thoughtful manner (doesn’t simply restate material; shows comprehension). Paper is double-spaced, 1” margins, 12-point font, no typos or handwritten corrections. Very limited spelling, punctuation, or grammatical errors.

  1. What are the differences between slavery as it existed in Africa versus its existence in America? Do you believe that these differences are significant? How and why?
  2. How did law, custom, and culture reconcile the emergence of chattel slavery with Christian precepts which reject the idea that one human can own or forcibly control another human being? What arguments were made to justify slavery? Which groups profited from the slave trade?
  3. According to Howard Zinn, “…there is evidence that where whites and blacks found themselves with common problems…they behaved toward one another as equals” and later says “Only one fear was greater than the fear of black rebellion in the new American colonies. That was the fear that discontented whites would join black slaves to overthrow the existing order.” What were some actions the elite took to undermine the unity of whites, blacks and Native Americans?
  4. What is the “color line”? How does Howard Zinn describe the way this color line was drawn in early America?
